Waste-free Lunch Week: April 16th – 20th

In honor of Earth Day, Sumac will hold Waste Free Lunch Week and we are hoping for 100% participation. Sumac and LVUSD are proud to do our parts to reduce landfill waste (LVUSD’s Green Initiative) and ask that you partner with us and your children to make small changes that will have a big impact! And we will emphasize this green initiative with Waste Free Lunch Week! April 16 - 20th.
Food For Thought
  • The average elementary school creates 18,760 pounds of lunch waste.
  • A child using disposable plastic in their lunch generates 67 lbs. of waste per school year.

Here are some quick & easy ways to pack a waste-free lunch with your child and make a meaningful memory together:
  • Have Fun! The goal is to pack only items that can be eaten, recycled, taken home or composted.
  • Try to pack the amount of food your child will eat. Discuss this with them beforehand.
  • Unbleached paper towels and parchment are commercially compostable (even if they are soiled). Wrap sandwiches, muffins, cookies or cheese and crackers etc. with these materials.
  • Invest in reusable containers, write your child’s first and last name on them and wash at home.
  • Teachers and Staff will support your children by reminding them to bring reusable containers home and will help return lost or left containers found on campus...we are all in this together!
